(Continuation of Boo-chan’s birthday celebration. In case you missed out here‘s our fabulous lunch at the luxurious Ukai-tei)
Boo-chan and I love mexican food, so we had birthday dinner plans with Mr. T and Fee at Fonda de la Madrugada (フォンダ・デ・ラ・ マドゥルガーダ) in Harajuku (原宿). It’s hard to find good mexican in Tokyo, so we were excited to eat here.
When you first walk into the entrance of Fonda de la Madrugada you are greeted with many stairs which takes your from Tokyo to the heart of Mexico. The stairs leads to the actual restaurant, which is on two floors. There is graffiti left on the walls from former customers, which gives the place ambiance.
It’s hard to find the right words to describe Fonda de la Madrugada, but it looks like a Disney-made version of Mexico (in a good way though). All of the furniture, tiles, and decor were imported directly from Mexico. The chefs are also from Mexico, so you can taste of authentic Mexican food.
We met Mr T and Fee there and ordered our yummy drinks. 1. It’s weird that many places don’t have midori liquor in Japan, so I happy to see they had midori coladas, so that is what I ordered. Boo-chan wanted a pina colada, Mr T got a margarita, and Fee got a frozen margarita. We toasted to Boo-chan’s birthday! 2. As we were hungry they quickly brought out complimentary chips and salsa. 3. We also ordered fresh guacamole (avocado dip) with it.
1. We all love taquitos, so ordering Taquito Dorados was a must! The crispy corn shells were filled with delicious chicken and topped with avocado slices, sour cream and tomatoes. 2. It was followed by a cheesy delicacy, Queso Fundido which is a Mexican style cheese fondu with chorizo sausages. 3. It’s served with flour tortillas, and can be eaten plain or with salsa. The pic makes it look kinda gross, but it was divine!! This dish is one of my all time favorites–highly recommended!!
From here, Fee took over with the ordering as our resident Mexican food expert! Next stop, we have the meat corner!! 1. It began with Puntas Mexicanos-stewed beef, veggies and chili. This dish was spicy!! At first taste it was delish, but then suddenly the spiciness hits you! The boys were okay, but i needed to eat the beans to calm the spiciness. It’s eaten with tortillas. 2. Enchiladas Tricolor was flavored with three different sauces; green tomatoes, mole, and red tomatoes. The enchiladas were stuffed with boiled chicken and paired with refried mexican beans. They were all tasty.
Our dinner was then pleasantly interrupted with the mariachis. They strolled over to our table and asked me what kinda of music I would like to hear. The guitarist proceeded to ask if I wanted to hear a romantico song but I blurted out “La Cucaracha” (the cockroach song), so that is what they serenaded us with. He said I could chose one more song, so I chose the traditional Mexican birthday song, Las Mananitas, for my Boo-chan!!
After Boo-chan’s birthday song it was back to eating. 1.We ordered Tacos de Pescado (fish tacos) and 2. Tacos de Cerdo (pork tacos). Even though we were getting full we ate them up quickly. They both came with spicy hot sauce.
After all this food, we were stuffed! We let our tummies rest for awhile and ordered round two of drinks. I had a horchata-my fav sweet non-alcoholic drink. Boo-chan got a midori colada and Mr T was feeling experimental and ordered the cactus frozen margarita. I had a sip of the cactus drink, it was very tart but refreshing.
We couldn’t leave without eating something sweet although we were soooo full! So we ordered two desserts and split them. 1. Arroz con Leche was a sweet Mexican style rice pudding topped with raisins and cinnamon. It was served cold and tasted great. 2. Rosquillas de Manzanas were fried apple fritters. This was very tasty but I wish it was served with ice cream.
We all ate way too much, good thing the walk to the station was 6 minutes and we could get some fresh air and exercise. hahhaa. It was fun to celebrate Boo-chan’s birthday, eat delicious food, and spend time with good friends. Where do you go to celebrate with friends?
