I love tonkatsu, it has always been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. So, what do you do when you are craving that crispy breaded fried pork cutlet?? You make your way to Shinjuku’s Takashimaya Department Store and eat at Katsukura (かつくら新宿高島屋店)!
Be careful when you go to Takashimaya, because there are actually two different tonkatsu restaurants. Luckily they are on different floors. 1. Here is the entrance of Katsukura. It’s simple and easy to find. 2. Inside the restaurant is narrow long restaurant.
I am having lunch with a family friend Mrs Tu, who is also a big Katsukura fan. We both decided on the Premium Loin Cutlet Set (桃園ロースかつ膳). Since I’m eating for two, I decided to go for the 200g cutlet. Mrs Tu went for the 170g. The sets come with miso soup, cabbage, rice and pickles. Everything but the pickles and tonkatsu are all you can eat.
Before you dig into your scrumptious pork, let’s prepare the sauce. There is sauce (とんかつソース) provided in the large ceramic bowl on the right and a stronger sauce (濃口ソース) in the middle. The pot on the left is yuzu dressing (ゆずドレッシング) for the cabbage.
First you need to grate the sesame seeds in the bowl with the wooden stick. You can start to smell the fresh aroma from the sesame seeds. After you grind it to the consistency you desire, you pour the sauce into the bowl and mix it. Now you are ready to eat!
Our food is looks great! The pot on the left is filled with piping hot rice. We were also given miso soup and pickles.
Here is my fabulous 200g Tonkatsu–breaded to perfection! The cabbage was also crisp and fresh.
Let’s take a look at the juicy tender meat!
I’m always extremely satisfied with the food I eat here. It’s great and definitely hits the spot. If you are in need of some delish tonkatsu please try Katsukura. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
